TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF SARANDA

ABOUT SARANDA

Saranda is the largest resort on the southern Albanian coast. In recent years it has grown rapidly and has become a popular summer holiday destination. Its development was primarily influenced by its proximity to Corfu, Greece, where several ferries sail back and forth daily. The city's name means "forty saints" in both Greek and Italian, referring to the forty martyrs of Sebasta. Saranda stretches along the Albanian coast of the Ionian Sea and has a Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year. Since the fall of communism in Albania, Saranda has grown into a major tourist attraction. According to The Guardian, like the rest of the Albanian Riviera, Saranda is "is set to become the new undiscovered gem of an overpopulated Mediterranean Sea". Tourism is therefore the main economic resource, while other resources include services, fishing and construction.

LËKURËSI CASTLE

Lekursi Castle rises above Saranda on a hill. Fragments of the walls and two bastions have been preserved from the Ottoman fortress to this day. Currently, the castle is leased by a private owner who runs a restaurant with an observation deck here. You can enjoy great views from the ruins.

The castle was erected in the 16th century by order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. It is a square fortress with bastions in the corners. It is quite badly damaged. Only in one room are fragments of frescoes from the 17th century. For several years, the castle has been leased by a private entrepreneur. Following the contract, he renovated and secured the walls and built a restaurant serving Albanian delicacies. The castle is a great vantage point. You can see Saranda, the coast of the Ionian Sea, and the Greek island of Corfu.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF BUTRINT

Butrint is the largest archaeological site related to ancient culture outside Greece and Italy. It is located on a seaside promontory near Saranda. The ruins of the baths, agora with the seat of the authorities, temples of Minerva and Asclepius, the amphitheater, houses of dignitaries, a gymnasium, as well as an early Christian basilica have been preserved here. The complex is on the UNESCO list. Butrint was one of the most significant Greek cities. It functioned as a thriving trade center until the second half of the 1st millennium AD. During the excavations, it was possible to discover the remains of buildings from different periods, Greek, Roman, and early Christian. The peninsula on which the city is located is separated from the Greek island of Corfu by a 3-kilometer sea isthmus. It is 6 kilometers from the land border with Greece. In ancient times, the city was an important trading center. It also had a port. Until now, you can see the remains of the walls that surrounded them. There is also the Acropolis hill, where archaeological work is still ongoing. In addition to ancient temples, squares, and public buildings, you can also see an early Christian basilica and a palace from the 5th century. Items unearthed during archaeological works are displayed in a small museum.

PULËBARDHA BEACH

Pulebardha Beach is located in the resort of Ksamili near Saranda. It is developed, you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas. Famous for its crystal clear waters and excellent seafood restaurants. The beach is located in a small, shallow cove. It is surrounded by picturesque rocks. It is covered with fine gravel. Thanks to the rocky ground, the sea here acquires a beautiful color, ranging from blue to green. There is a small car park above the beach, from where you can go downstairs to the sea. There is a restaurant here that specializes in fish and seafood.

BLUE EYE

The source of the Bistrica River - the Blue Eye, or Syri and Kalter, is one of the most popular attractions in the south of Albania. It is located near the village of Muzinë, about 23 km from Saranda. Under this name, there is a very strong spring that emerges from a depth of about 50 meters. The truth is, however, that it may be even deeper. However, so far divers have failed to descend any further to confirm this. The water in Syri and Kalter has an intense shade of blue and even in summer, its temperature does not exceed 15 degrees C. The whole area is very popular among tourists and Albanians themselves. Blue Eye was once the private property of the country's leader Enver Hoxha. He invited his guests here to show them the unusual color of the water. The water in the tank is crystal clear and you can bathe. Many daredevils use this option. The Blue Eye was declared a natural monument. In the shade of trees and the cold waters of the spring, you can rest from the heat. Of course, some daredevils jump to Syri and Kalter from the viewing platform directly above its surface. Since the thermal shock is guaranteed, it is better to prepare for such a jump.

PHOINIKE

The ruins of the ancient city of Phoinike are certainly not as popular as the UNESCO-listed ruins of Butrinti. However, due to the views and the fact that virtually no one looks there, it is worth considering visiting them. Phoinike is located on a hill above Finiq village, not far from Saranda. The city was probably founded in the 5th century BC. Fragments of the defensive walls, the ruins of the theater, the foundations of the former basilica, and villas have survived to our times. It is best to come here in the late afternoon, because during the day, due to the lack of shade, it is very hot there.
